Specifically speaking, the number of parcels handled by this sector increased from 51 billion in 2018 to 83 billion in 2020. During the three years, deliveries to and from rural areas expanded from 12 billion to 30 billion.

Two reasons can account for the phenomenon. Firstly, express delivery in China is very rapid and cheap, so people are inclined to shop online. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it is not convenient for people to shop in offline stores, thus causing more people to shop online, which can explain the boom in China’s courier sector. Secondly, the improvement of rural residents’ living standards and the quality of the courier delivery in rural areas contribute to the increase in the number of deliveries to and from rural areas.

From my perspective, the phenomenon is the result of social development, and it is positive. To achieve the sustainable development of China’s courier sector, the government should implement a package of policies to support the development of a smarter logistics network and protect the interests of customers.
