外滩,原来是上海城厢外东北面的沿江滩地,俗称"黄浦滩"。1843年上海开埠后,英国第一任驻沪领事巴富尔看中了这块地方,就在1845年以上海道台公布的所谓"上海土地章程"为依据,划定外滩在内的800亩土地为英租界,沿江开筑道路称"黄浦路、黄埔滩路"。上世纪初前后,就有国内外银行入住,并逐步发展成为"东方的华尔街"。直到1945年,才改名为中山东一路。
