The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. This regattacommemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during the Warring States Period . He was upright, loyal and highly esteemed for his wise counsel that brought peace and prosperity to the state. However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified Qu, he was disgraced and dismissed from office. Realizing that the country was now in the hands of evil and corrupt officials, Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save him but were unable to even recover his body. Thereafter, the state declined and was eventually conquered by the State of Qin.

The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth month. But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and told the mourners that a huge reptilein the river had stolen the rice. The spirit then advised them to wrap the rice in silk and bind it with five different-colored threads before tossing it into the river.During the Duanwu Festival, a glutinous rice pudding called zong zi is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu. Ingredients such as beans, lotus seeds, chestnuts, pork fat and the golden yolk of a salted duck egg are often added to the glutinous rice. The pudding is then wrapped with bamboo leaves, bound with a kind of raffia and boiled in salt water for hours.The dragon-boat races symbolize the many attempts to rescue and recover Qu's body. A typical dragon boat ranges from 50-100 feet in length, with a beam of about 5.5 feet, accommodating two paddlers seated side by side.

A wooden dragon head is attached at the bow, and a dragon tail at the stern. A banner hoisted on a pole is also fastened at the stern and the hull is decorated with red, green and blue scales edged in gold. In the center of the boat is a canopied shrine behind which the drummers, gong beaters and cymbalplayers are seated to set the pace for the paddlers. There are also men positioned at the bow to set off firecrackers, toss rice into the water and pretend to be looking for Qu. All of the noise and pageantry creates an atmosphere of gaiety and excitement for the participants and spectators alike. Over the years, the story of Qu’s demise transformed into the traditions of racing dragon boats and eating zongzi – a kind of rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. The races have certainly captured the imagination of people from all over the world. Every spring there are nearly 60 dragon boat races held outside of China in cities from Vancouver to Sydney, from Gdańsk, Poland to Cape Town, South Africa. Canada alone has nearly 50 dragon boat teams and Germany has nearly 30.

So what is it about the Dragon Boat Festival that appeals to foreigners? “It’s an unusual sport,” says one racer from Germany. “It’s not like everybody’s doing it. 我今年有幸去看了一次赛龙舟，因为爸爸当天正好有空，所以我们全家去看赛龙舟。到达赛龙舟的场地时，岸两边早已被围观的人们围得水泄不通了，我看了桥上的一个空挡，便叫家人挤了过去。这个位置居高临下整个江面一目了然。

赛龙舟开始了，每只龙舟都像一支离弦的箭，一个劲的向前冲，每一只龙舟下面都绑着不少粽子，每向前一步，龙舟上都有人用刀子把粽子斩下扔进水里。每只龙舟的速度都不分上下：一会儿1号领先，不一会儿8号又追上了。

突然，划船手好像力气大增，每一只龙舟的速度更快了。这时，击鼓手开始鸣鼓了，划船手顿时很有节奏的跟着喊起：“咚!咚!咚咚咚!嗬!嗬!嗬嗬嗬……”天公也好像来助威，开始下起了毛毛细雨。真是鼓声!人声!助威声!声声震耳!雨水!汗水!江水水水相容!

龙舟的速度越来越快，仿佛龙群在江水中急速飞腾。渐渐的，渐渐的。1号，5号，9号构成了领先集团。100米!50米!20米……终点越来越近，只见5号的力量一发不可收拾的爆发了!把后面的两条龙舟远远地甩在后面，然后冲线了!

赛龙舟真是一项激烈的比赛啊!

端午节到咯！我们家特地买来一盒粽子来欢度端午。我津津有味地品尝着美味的粽子，不禁赞道：“真是好吃，希望每天都是端午节。”话音刚落，我就听见妈妈足以传遍整栋楼的尖叫，我和爸爸急忙赶过去。

只见妈妈指着一个房间的门，惊恐地说：“这怎么回事！”我和爸爸不约而同地往门内一望，同时被吓到了。我的天啊！这房间里面摆得全都是大大小小的盒装粽子！我连忙掐了自己一下，“哎哟，痛死我了……看来不是梦……”

“你去！”爸爸妈妈互相对望一眼，极有默契地双手一推，把我推入“粽海”。

“胆小鬼！”我一边抱怨一边望向粽子包装盒。只见盒子上赫然写着几个大字“雷神牌粽子”，然后下面是一个造型惊人的“神”，后面跟着歌词“偶雷偶雷偶雷偶雷……”我愕然，难道这就是传说中的“雷神”！

为了解决这不速之客——“雷神牌粽子”，我和爸妈访亲拜友，白送粽子。送的人家都不好意思要了。哪知送完了一批粽子还剩一大堆，堆的跟山一样高。

为了正常的作息，夺回被粽子霸占的房间。我被迫当起了小贩。每天放完学就一边写作业，一边卖粽子。可是端午节都过去了，生意惨淡啊！我埋没在一堆粽子里，过往的人们在粽子前面纷纷议论，“这孩子真可怜，哪位好心人，把她的粽子买几盒送到废品收购站吧……”我汗如雨下。

因为学习退步的缘故，老妈结束了我的“小贩生涯”，她一脸沉重的告诉我后果——那就是，每天一日三餐都得多加2个大粽子！

这项决定导致我一听跟粽子谐音或沾边的词胃里就开始翻滚。可那一大堆粽子还是不见少……

下一个端午要来了，我们还在与粽子作艰苦斗争，这就是我们家传说中的“粽子战争”。这粽子好像怎么吃也吃不完。

就在我们一家陷入绝望时，一个唱着“偶雷偶雷偶雷偶雷……”的东西(？)经过，一听歌词，怎么那么耳熟？我一看，天哪！竟然是雷神！(这形象已深入我心。)我看见他马上大吼：“我不要房间里的这些粽子啦！！”，一瞬间，那些“雷神牌粽子”消失的无影无踪。我长舒一口气，终于不用再受折磨了。

下一个端午前夕。爸爸又抱着一大盒粽子回到家，我看着这一情景，默默地站了很久，然后像纸片一样轻飘飘地跌在地面。在昏倒之前，我用最后一丝气息缓缓说道：“我不要再吃……“雷神牌”粽子了……”

然后昏倒在地。

爸爸看着我，缓缓说道：“这是今年的粽子。”
